What is the Mercedes Diesel Emission SCANDAL?
Vehicle software cheated air pollution tests by adjusting the engine to emit less and make it look like a low-emissions vehicle, when in fact they were emitting dangerous levels of pollutants.
Potential impacts on Diesel Mercedes customers
Thousands of Mercedes customers have had their vehicles recalled due to the issue with the vehicles diesel emissions. Some customers claim since having the software update, that they have had problems with their car or van. For example, encountering
power loss, which then has caused an increase in maintenance costs. Others have
mentioned that they have noticed increased fuel consumption and lowered the value of their car.
Some felt that they had paid more than the car was actually worth, and not quite the eco-friendly car that they thought they’d purchased. Others stated that they would never have acquired the car in the first place, had they known about the diesel emissions fault.
If you feel that you are one of the hundreds and thousands that have been affected, why
not see if our panel of experts can help bring a claim on your behalf.

The 'DieselGate' Scandal
Dieselgate started in the US back in 2015, when car manufacturer Volkswagen were found to have manipulated their results to get around the emission law designed to help keep the air clean.
The US Environmental Protection Agency stated that some VW cars had been fitted with so-called “Defeat Devices”. These particular gadgets had sophisticated coding software which could detect when the car was being tested for the NOx emissions.
NOx emissions known as Nitrogen Oxides are gases which are emitted by vehicles such as cars and vans, and may be harmful to the environment and humans.
The device then made the car meet the emission standards. When the car was not being tested and on the road, the device would turn off and the vehicle would discharge more pollution into the atmosphere which may be around 40 times higher than the legal limit.
Millions of vehicles worldwide have been affected, meaning that some consumers have purchased or leased diesel cars and vans that had higher emissions than actually advertised.
What happened in the Mercedes emissions scandal?
The Mercedes emissions scandal began in 2016, one year after U.S. regulators found fellow German car brand VW guilty of breaking Clean Air Act Regulations. The German road vehicle authority (KBA) discovered that Daimler, Mercedes’ parent company, used software to manipulate emissions test results. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions appeared lower to testers than under real-world conditions.

Regulators allege that Mercedes’ software could detect when a test was taking place and change engine characteristics to lower NOx emissions accordingly. Consequently, hundreds of thousands of customers bought vehicles from the firm, believing they offered low emissions when they didn’t.
American owners of diesel vehicles first brought a case against the German automaker in February 2016, alleging it of fitting “defeat devices” to its cars and vans. Two months later, Daimler said it would conduct an internal investigation, looking into its diesel exhaust systems for evidence of foul play.
In May 2017, prosecutors raided eleven Daimler manufacturing sites in Germany linked to emissions scandals and cheating. A year later, authorities forced the car company to recall more than 774,000 vehicles across Europe.
Mercedes vigorously defended itself and challenged the KBA’s findings. However, German authorities fined the company more than €870 million for violating EU emissions regulations in 2019. US authorities reached a $1.5 billion settlement with the firm a year later.
UK owners can now bring a claim against Mercedes
UK owners of diesel Mercedes vehicles can now bring claims against the German manufacturer. Proceedings against Mercedes began in May 2020 and multiple law firms are now offering group action cases to their clients.
UK consumer protection laws let you claim if you bought the vehicle new or second-hand. You also qualify if you purchased via a lease agreement, sold the vehicle or had to fix your car or van to meet emissions standards. Mercedes may be liable for these additional costs. You don’t need to own the vehicle outright to take legal action.
Practically all Mercedes models were party to the emissions scandal. Owners of A Class, C Class, CLA Class, E Class, GLC Class, M Class, S Class and more are all eligible to join group action and may be entitled to compensation.
To start the process, first, you should check if you are eligible to make a claim. Enter your registration number into our checker and begin your free check. It will tell you whether your vehicle qualifies.
Next, you’ll need to wait for lawyers to complete the group action against Mercedes. This process could take some time, given the complexity of the case and the number of applications.
Mercedes could settle with drivers out of court, similar to VW. It could also contribute towards legal fees, increasing driver’s compensation.
Once you join a group action claim, legal firms will take over the case for you. You shouldn’t need to do much work after you provide initial details.
You should not make a Mercedes diesel emissions claim by yourself. That’s because the cost of doing so will likely outweigh any compensation received several times. Only make claims as part of a group.
